The proposed plot for the 1990 sequel was as follows;
"The Deetz family moves to Hawaii to develop a resort. Construction begins, and it’s quickly discovered that the hotel will be sitting on top of an ancient burial ground. Beetlejuice comes in to save the day. He gets jealous when a hunky surfer guy takes interest in Lydia. Beets wants to destroy him with a massive tidal wave so he can have Lydia all to himself."
We can all be thankful that sequel never took place. Regardless of what could have been in 1990, Tim Burton and Seth Grahame-Smith are once again stirring rumors that could bring Beetlejuice back the big screen.
Buton had this to say when asked about bringing the 'Juice back;
"Yes. I love that character, and Michael Keaton is so great in it. I always think about how great and fun that character was, so I just said to [Dark Shadows writer] Seth Grahame-Smith, ‘If you have some idea about it, go for it, and then I’ll look at it freshly.’ In the past, I tried some things, but that was way back when. He seemed really excited about it. Michael was so great in it. I’m sure he’d strangely tap right back into it."
I can't imagine much of the original cast would come back to reprise their roles. Guess it all depends on the script that is written. How great would it be to see Alec Baldwin, Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton back together! One thing is for certain, if Keaton doesn't come back to play the beloved character then someone will have massive shoes to fill.
Keaton said this was one of his favorite roles of all-time. Interestingly enough he only appears in the original film for 17 1/2 minutes. Another interesting tidbit is the nod to Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas. During the scene where Beetlejuice turns into a human carousel Jack Skellington can be seen on his hat.
