Saw 8 would greatly benefit by being directed by Ty Jones. Yes, that is a strong statement. But in this independent feature he achieves the spark of something rare in film today, familiar yet new.
A couple whose marriage is sinking fast enters an old, empty building and encounters the test of their strength, survival, love and entire existence in the form of a sadistic torturer whose purpose is not clear to them.
As a woman who loves horror films I am often asked why? To me horror has always been about lessons. They are basically morality tales invented to teach us all. Sometimes the hard way. And sometimes the very hard way! All of us go about our lives thinking of all the humdrum chores,tasks-schedules;etc. Horror elevates us above the everyday. If we were dealing with life or death, we would choose life more times than not. If we could somehow find the lesson we most need to learn and see it's affects for our lives, how far would you have to go?
Recently screened at the Dances With Films Festival in LA, and also shown at the Kansas City film festival, Last Breath has garnered attention for it's moody settings and schizophrenic changes in tone, and foreboding. But it is the films denouement which catches the viewer, and even if you see it coming, the effect is cathartic.
Ty Jones writes, stars and directs and would probably sell you a ticket too. He is a dedicated film creator, and tireless promoter of his progeny, as I discovered in a recent phone interview fresh from his success of Honorable Mention for best feature at the Festival. He credits Steven Spielberg as his inspiration to make films, and asked if there are conflicts with helming so many different jobs on a film-he states that he takes criticism when it improves the end project.
Since this is a horror film, I asked what the hardest aspect of horror is? "Scaring people!" Simplistic, but accurate with overdosed horror fiends. He then proceeds to tell me about some experiences with filming rats.
Check out Ty Jones' profile on Facebook and he will answer questions when able.He believes in social media as a means to connect with an interest base. Last Breath has a following. If you have the chance, see it you can. They are working on a DVD release, and I
look forward to any of his films in the future.
