Column: Tales From the Library
Staff:
Kate Dirks & J.D.

May not be suitable for younger readers.

Kate and J.D. are passionate about literature and knows how to weed out the winners from the turds. Gather round boys and ghouls and listen to some Tales from the Library.

The Walking Dead - Rise of the Governor
As the title indicates, Rise of the Governor focuses on the notorious Governor of Woodbury; however, we don't really know who he is. The story starts off with a group of survivors trying to make their way to Atlanta.

The Mammoth Book of Slasher Movies: An A-Z Guide...
Over 250 horror films are celebrated in "The Mammoth Book of Slasher Movies: An A-Z Guide to More Than 60 Years of Blood and Guts", by Peter Normanton. On average, each film is given two pages for plot summary and interesting notes, as well as major production credits (with an emphasis on the directors).

Hellzapalooza
Hellzapalooza is a unique book/anthology that far exceeded my expectations. The storyline is solid, characters are well developed, and there's plenty of gore and sex thrown in the mix to keep horror enthusiasts turning the pages.

Catching Fire
The second book picks up about six months after the end of the games as Catniss and Peeta are about to embark on their victory tour of all the districts. Life is more stable for the family of Catniss but she is still miserable...

Hunger Games
This is long overdue but since I’m rarely on time for anything, I say, “Better late than never.” Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months, you’ve likely heard of cinematic juggernaut that is The Hunger Games.

11/22/63
What would you change if you could go back in time? Would you choose to change an event that impacted your life or would you leave the past unchanged, wary of what unintended consequences that change might bring? With knowledge of the future, would you try to change the course of history for the entire world?

1984
Written in the year 1949, “1984” is a depressing and disturbing look at the future and the government – Big Brother - that is trying to create its own version of a utopian (perfect) society through degradation and contradicting thought.

Under the Dome
For some of us, to be enclosed in a space with other people, especially our neighbors, is our worst nightmare personified. The idea of sharing the same bubble with our co-workers, friends, or family is the stuff horror movies are made of…or science fiction books.

Odd Thomas
On page 32, Odd simply states, “I see dead people. But then, by God, I do something about it.” This statement is an obvious stab at Haley Joel Osment’s character in The Sixth Sense (1999) and initially turned me off from the story. A rehashing of an aspect of a story that was already told through cinema?

Let the Right One In
What are vampires? Are they classic, handsome bloodsuckers with black capes that can turn into bats, rats, and other rodents at will? Are they sparkling, immortal teenagers with fluffy, gelled hair?

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
In Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, written by Seth Grahame-Smith, young Abe quickly comes to the critical part of his path by watching his mother die from the bite of a vampire. Through tragedy and death, Lincoln finds his purpose.

Hellbound Heart
“We will tear your soul apart!” That infamous phrase comes from one of the most demonic, satanic villians in horror history. His ways of torture haunt the dreams of those who have watched him on the big screen or read about him in literature.

The Darkest Evening of the Year
Dogs. Who let the dogs out? It’s a dog-eat-dog world. Snoop Doggy DAWWWWWG (Snoop Dog). Dogs are a popular part of our society. Cute dogs. Scary dogs. Dog killers – ahem, Vick, ahem. Dogs are cool. We all love dogs. But dogs should NEVER…I repeat, NEVER…fly.

Shadow on the Sun
Despite Matheson’s efforts in other well-written, interesting works such as I Am Legend, Hell House, and Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, I found myself enjoying Shadow on the Sun the most, which came as a huge surprise.
Western Horror.

Outer Dark
Incest is the foundation for Cormac McCarthy’s second novel titled Outer Dark. It is the story of Rinthy, a closed off, hermit girl who bears the baby of her brother, Culla. Culla, desperate and ignorant, leaves the infant baby in the woods to die.

Curse of the Wendigo
The Curse of the Wendigo by Rick Yancey is the sequel to The Monstrumologist. We rejoin Dr. Pellinore Warthrop and Will Henry as they are thrust into the Canadian wilderness in search of a demon monster called The Wendigo

The Monstrumologist
Are monsters real? Do they walk amongst us? Do they wait for the night to fall and drift through the shadows, preying on those that are unsuspecting and unbelieving? According to Rick Yancey, the answers are yes, yes, and yes.

Time for Me
We fear the cycle. We fear getting older. We fear seeing those loving faces turn from googley-eyed onlookers to bereaving, grief-stricken mourners. We fear death and anything close to it. Time For Me by Barry Hoffman
